10:12 PM - The Religious Right Leadership Has Become the Religious Wrong
If evangelicals are going to attack Trump for his sins why do they not equally examine other GOP and Democrat candidates? This is hypocrisy at it's worst. Just as the GOP establishment co-opted the original tea party movement it has also co-opted the religious right. If evangelical leadership can't do any better than it has in the last 50+ years it needs to shut up completely about politics.
...a new generation of believers was questioning whether the religious right had become little more than a bombastic mouthpiece for the Republican Party.
Does Russell Moore really represent Southern Baptists?
When Russell Moore was appointed president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, the political arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, it seemed like a perfect marriage. But according to Will Hall, editor of the Baptist Message, Louisiana Baptists’ state newspaper, the honeymoon may be over.
Hall penned an editorial last week raising questions about whether Moore really speaks for Southern Baptists. He argues that Moore has snubbed his fellow Southern Baptists and taken “troubling” stances on a number of key issues. And, according to Hall, Moore expresses “disrespect and even contempt for any Christian” who disagrees with him.
So does Moore truly represent the 15 million members of the Southern Baptist Convention, America’s largest Protestant denomination?
Now Trump Is Just Openly Attacking The Religious Right
On Monday morning, Trump published a tweet labeling Russell Moore, head of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, as “a terrible representative of Evangelicals.” Moore is an established leader of the Religious Right and has traditionally voiced support for Republican candidates, but has been unusually critical of Trump, who he sees as unrepresentative of evangelical Christian values.
How Donald Trump is tearing religious conservatives apart
“When God wants to move in history, he doesn’t always pick the favorite evangelical,” said Wallnau. He said that God brought Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill to power at crucial moments in history, the way He is now raising up Trump for our time. And he knows this, Wallnau said, because God told him so. Wallnau said God told him specifically that Trump is “a wrecking ball to the spirit of political correctness.”
Donald Trump Is Disrupting The Religious Right’s Christian-America Dreams
The closed-door meeting in Texas in December at which dozens of Religious Right leaders agreed to rally around Ted Cruz for president was in some ways a big payoff for years of work by Republican political operative David Lane. Lane believes America was founded by and for Christians and has a national mission to advance the Christian faith. He sees politics as spiritual warfare against the evil forces of secularism and “pagan” homosexuality. Lane has been building an “army” of conservative evangelical pastors to run for office and turn their churches into get-out-the-vote operations for Republican candidates.
