Call To Discernment

Calling Christians to Biblical Christianity. Christians must have discernment in all areas of life in this end time of deception, realizing also that American leadership of both political parties are leading us into the New World Order of the coming antichrist. Do not be conformed to this world. Rom. 12:2. Expose the deeds of darkness. Eph. 5:11. "He that is not zealous against error, is not likely to be zealous for truth." J.C. 6:36 PM - America's Hidden Occult History

"It is in America that the [new age] transformation will take place, and has already silently commenced."
H.P. Blavatsky, The Secret Doctrine, 1888

Recently I read the book Occult America: The Secret History of How Mysticism Shaped Our Nation by Mitch Horowitz. It was a fascinating read of how Satan's followers put down roots in early America about the same time that Christians did. All this time they have been growing together, now with the evil choking out the good.

America has provided fertile ground for alternative spirituality, particularly the form known as occult, whose American leaders, unlike their more grandiose European counterparts, sought to remake mystical ideas as tools of public good and self-help, says Horowitz, editor-in-chief at Tarcher. Looking back at the growth of the spiritualist and utopian movements, he introduces the reader to a parade of personalities, both familiar and obscure: dreamers and planners who flourished along the Psychic Highway. He begins with Shaker Mother Ann, who arrived in America in 1774 followed by, among many others, pioneer prophetess Jemima Wilkinson; Poughkeepsie Seer Andrew Jackson Davis; Madame Blavatsky, who founded the Theosophical Society in 1875 and popularized the word occultism; Frank B. Robinson, the Mail Order Messiah; and Edgar Cayce with his past-life readings. Horowitz covers a wide variety of topics, from voodoo to the tenets of the New Age, psychics in the White House, Rosicrucianism, Wicca, arcane Masonic imagery, Tarot cards, the controversial reincarnation of Bridey Murphy and the origin of the science fictional Shaver mystery. Employing extensive research while writing with an authoritative tone, Horowitz succeeds in showing how a new spiritual culture developed in America.

The following are a few key points I got from the book.

Jemima Wilkinson in 1776 was the first recognized public preacher. She called herself the Publick Universal Friend and preached claims of supernatural rebirth and spirit channeling.

Andrew Jackson Davis, the Poughkeepsie Seer claimed visions of heaven that included all people of every religion. He was named after the future President to be. Both he and Wilkinson claimed to be Christians.

In early America the occult and liberalism were closely joined. Isn't that also true today?

Abraham Lincoln was reportedly the first President to hold a seance in the White House. Mary Lincoln had a large interest in the occult. This seemingly parallels Ronald Reagan and Nancy. Ronald Reagan once proudly stated, "Nancy and I enjoy glancing at the daily astrology charts in our morning paper." Their interest in the occult was more than casual.

Manley P. Hall, author of The Secret Teachings of All Ages had an ongoing friendship later in life with actor Bela Legosi  and actor/folksinger Burl Ives. Ives recorded some absolutely beautiful records of hymns but was a dedicated freemason.

The most surprising item in the book was about the I Love Lucy TV show. Remember Desi Arnaz singing Babalu? He was singing about a voodoo demon spirit! The words in English are below.

The Ouija Board made it's debut in America by 1860 coming from Europe.

Wicca and Zen Buddhism began flourishing in America in the 1950's and 60's.

The book was thoroughly footnoted by chapter.

More about it can be read here.

Babalu
Babalu
Babalu aye
Babalu aye
Babalu
Jungle drums were badly beating
In the glare of eerie lights:
While the natives kept repeating
Ancient jungle rites.
All at once the dusky warriors began
To raise their arms to skies above
A native stepped forward to chant to his Voodoo Godess of love.
Ah!

CHORUS
Great Babalu!
I'm so lost and forsaken
Ah, great Babalu
